A few facts about Spanish
More than 570 million people speak Spanish and around 440 million of them are native speakers. That makes Spanish the fourth most widely spoken language in the world.
Spanish is the official language of Spain and many Central and South American countries. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union, the United Nations and the Organisation of American States. Spanish also has a somewhat official status in some western and southwestern US states, like Texas, New Mexico and California, for example. Spanish-speaking people account for around 30 percent of the total population in these states.
With a GDP of around 1.05 trillion euros, the Spanish economy is one of the largest economies in the world.

More facts about Spanish
Spanish is a world language and stems from the Romance branch of the Indo-European languages. The exact classification of Spanish is a highly debated topic among linguists. One view is that Spanish belongs among the group of Iberian Romance languages with Portuguese and Catalan. Another view considers Spanish to be one of the Western Romance languages along with French, Portuguese, Catalan and the other Romance languages.
Although “Spanish” is spoken in Spain as well as in Central and South America, linguistic characteristics in terms of articulation and dialect vary significantly among the different countries in some cases. For example, the typical “s” sound in European Spanish, which sounds like “th” in English, sounds like a normal “s” in Latin American Spanish. In addition, there are differences in elision and word endings in different countries and regions. Spanish uses a Latin alphabet and modern Spanish has additional acute accents for vowels and includes the letter ñ. The letters ch and ll were also once part of the Spanish alphabet, but they were removed and are now considered digraphs.
