A few facts about Slovak
Around seven million people around the world speak Slovak (slovenský jazyk). Approximately five million Slovak speakers live in Slovakia, while two million live elsewhere – and around a million of these people live in the USA. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia, an official language of the EU and Vojvodina (in Serbia) and a recognised minority language in Croatia, Austria, Poland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Hungary.
While written Slovak has been standardised since around 1840, spoken Slovak has numerous regional dialects. Some Slovaks living in the Czech Republic speak a mixture of Slovak and Czech, and this hybrid language is commonly referred to as Czechoslovak. Slovak is the easiest language to understand for those who speak another Slavic language, so it is often considered to be the Slavic “Esperanto”. The Czech and Slovak languages are so similar that Slovaks and Czechs can often understand each other relatively well. Due to the shared history of the Czech and Slovak peoples (when their two countries once formed Czechoslovakia), Czech and Slovak are recognised languages in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, respectively, and can still be used for official documents in both countries. Indeed, the use of both languages in official business is stipulated bilaterally in law.

Doing business in Slovakia
Slovakia is playing an increasingly important role in the European economy. The economies of Central and Eastern Europe underwent extensive structural transformation after 1989. Today, companies in Slovakia’s chemical industry, mechanical engineering industry, electrical industry, metallurgical industry, construction materials industry, food production industry, automotive industry and timber and paper industries all produce goods that are important for Western European and international markets.
The growth rate of Slovakia’s GDP is one of the highest in the EU. The nominal wage level is still comparatively low, however. Due to its central geographical location, EU membership (and having the Euro as its currency), stable economy, comparatively low labour costs and qualified workforce (35% of all jobs are in industry and over 60% are in the services sector), Slovakia has one of the highest inflows of foreign investment in Central and Eastern Europe. Germany is Slovakia’s largest foreign investor and trading partner.
Whether it’s management or business texts, websites, technical or legal documents, product data sheets, press releases or newsletters that you need translated – probicon exclusively uses native professional translators with industry-specific knowledge and offers experienced specialist translators for every specialised field. Naturally, this also applies to translations from Slovak into English/German as well as texts from English/German into Slovak.
