A few facts about Russian

Russian is arguably the most important Slavic language and is also considered a world language. Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Rusyn make up the East Slavic language group. There are 175 million native Russian speakers in total, and more than 275 million people speak Russian as a foreign language.

Russian is the official language of Russia and Belarus (in addition to Belarusian) and is also an official language of Kazakhstan (along with Kazakh) and Kyrgyzstan (along with Kyrgyz). In addition, Russian has been granted the official title of “the language of inter-ethnic communication” in Tajikistan. Due to historical events over the last century, many Russian-speaking people live in countries in Western, Central and Eastern Europe, in the Middle East, and in North and South America.
In the past, the Russian language was very important in the areas of academia, art and technology, and — in part — it still is today. Only a few years ago, Russian was the fourth most common language from which books were translated into other languages, as well as the seventh most common language for books to be translated into. In the period around 2010, Russian was the second most widely used language on the Internet.
