A few facts about Portuguese
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Macao, Mozambique, East Timor, São Tomé and Principe and is also one of the official languages of the European Union, the African Union, Mercosur/Mercosul, UNASUR, the OAS and the CPLP. Portuguese is also a recognised minority language in numerous American and African countries, and in some Asian countries as well.
In total, there are around 215 million native Portuguese speakers worldwide and another roughly 30 million people with Portuguese as their second language. Portuguese is considered a world language. The important role that foreign trade plays in the global market makes smooth communication in the Portuguese language a must.
Brazilian Portuguese is the variant of Portuguese that is spoken in Brazil, which has the largest population of Portuguese-speaking people by far. This means that although people who speak (European) Portuguese can often immediately recognise texts written in Brazilian Portuguese, the formulations these texts contain can sound slightly “foreign” to them.

Since joining the EC in 1986, Portugal has developed into an increasingly diversified economy focussed primarily on services. These services now account for around two-thirds of GDP.
Tourism is an extremely important part of Portugal’s economy, as Portugal is among the top 20 most-visited countries in the world. Tourist hotspots include Lisbon, Algarve, Madeira, Porto and Coimbra.
Around 80% of foreign trade is conducted with EU partners. The main export products are clothing, vehicles, machinery, chemical products, paper and mineral resources. Agriculture in Portugal produces a variety of crops and products, including cork, carob, chestnuts, pulp, olive oil and fine wines. Forestry also plays an important economic role.
