There are around five million native speakers of Norwegian, the majority of whom live in Norway. Norwegian is the official language of Norway as well as a working language and lingua franca of the Nordic Council.

Norwegian belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Indo-European language family and includes the two official standard varieties Bokmål (previously known as Riksmål until 1929) and Nynorsk. Approximately 85 to 95 percent of the Norwegian population writes in moderat Bokmål. probicon uses Bokmål as the standard for its Norwegian translations.
