A few facts about Flemish

The Dutch that is spoken in Belgium is often called Flemish. Around six million people, most of whom live in northern Belgium and the Brussels region, speak Flemish.

Flemish, the language spoken by the Flemish population in Belgium, has many different dialects. There are two Flemish dialects (West Flemish and East Flemish) and two Dutch dialects (Brabantian and Limburgish). In addition, there are five different forms of Flemish: the basic dialect, the common language, the regional colloquial language, the intermediate language (“Belgisch Beschaafd”) and the standard language.

With just a few exceptions, standard Flemish (standaardtaal, the standard language) is basically the same as Dutch. However, the belgicisms used in Flemish make it possible to determine fairly quickly whether a text has been translated into Dutch or Flemish.
