A few facts about Danish

There are around 5.3 million native Danish speakers. There are also approximately an additional 300,000 people around the world who speak Danish as a second language. Danish is the official language of Denmark and an official language of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the EU. Danish is also a minority language in the state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. Danish is a mandatory subject taught in schools in Iceland.

There are clear similarities between Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, which is why Norwegians, Swedes and Danes can usually communicate well with one another. In addition, because the Danish language was heavily influenced by Middle Low German, which was the official language of the Hanseatic League, there are many similarities between Danish and German. However, there are also numerous fauxamis (“false friends”) – i.e. words that sound similar in both languages but whose meanings are very different from one another.

The origins of written Danish date back to 1500 CE. Danish was also used in Norway as a written language until the 19th century. While Danish has many dialects, there is only one standard form of written Danish.

Denmark as a business location

The Danish economy boasts a wide range of innovative and export-orientated industrial companies and service providers. With its excellent geographical location and very good infrastructure, Denmark is one of the world’s leading nations in shipping and trade. Denmark’s other strong economic sectors are finance, mechanical and plant engineering, and the tourism and food industries.

More than 30% of Denmark’s GDP is generated through exports, in particular from the country’s mechanical engineering, pharmaceutical, food production and electronics industries. Denmark has also been exporting natural gas and oil since 2002. Germany is Denmark’s most important trading partner (followed by Sweden, Norway, the UK and China). The share of Denmark’s GDP accounted for by exports has increased steadily over the last few years, particularly through trade with Germany and China. Denmark is a member of all the major international economic organisations, such as the WTO, the OECD, the IMF and the World Bank.
