A few facts about Czech
Czech is spoken by around 12 million people around the globe. Around ten million of these people live in the Czech Republic. Czech belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, so it is similar to Slovak, Polish, Russian and Croatian, for example. Spoken Czech is very different from written Czech (spisovná čeština). While there is only one standard written Czech, there are numerous regional Czech dialects, with the most spoken one being a so-called interdialect (“Common Czech”, obecná čeština). The dialects spoken in the eastern part of the Czech Republic are called the Moravian dialects.
Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic and one of the official languages of the EU. Czech is a recognised minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Austria, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.
The Czech and Slovak languages are so similar that Slovaks and Czechs can often understand one another relatively well. Due to the shared history of the Czech and Slovak peoples (when their two countries once formed Czechoslovakia), Czech and Slovak are recognised languages in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, respectively, and can still be used for official documents in both countries. Indeed, the use of both languages in official business is stipulated bilaterally in law. Some Slovaks living in the Czech Republic speak a mixture of Czech and Slovak, commonly known as “Czechoslovak”.

The Czech Republic as a business location
As traditionally one of the most economically developed countries in Europe, the Czech Republic plays an important role in the European economy today. The Czech Republic has modern industrial plants and complexes in which goods are produced by the country’s automotive, metal production and processing, mechanical engineering, food production and timber industries, as well as by its chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical businesses, and its glass and ceramics industries – all for Western European and international markets.
The Czech Republic has one of the highest inflows of foreign investment among Central and Eastern European countries. This is due to its central location, EU membership, stable economy, skilled workforce, comparatively low labour costs and high-quality infrastructure. The biggest foreign investor in the Czech Republic is the Netherlands. Germany is by far the Czech Republic’s most important trading partner – nearly a third of all Czech foreign trade is with its neighbour to west.
The important role that foreign trade plays in the global market means that smooth communication in the Czech language is absolutely essential when interacting with Czech-speaking business partners. This is where probicon, as an experienced expert in professional Czech translations, can assist you. Our experienced project managers, who are always there for you, oversee the entire translation process to make sure that it runs smoothly and that all translations into or from Czech are delivered on time.
