A few facts about Chinese

Chinese is part of the Sino-Tibetan language family and Chinese languages are spoken today by around 1.4 billion people. Chinese is the official language of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Large groups of Chinese-speaking minorities can be found in all Southeast Asian countries.

The standardised form of Chinese that is used in China is Standard Chinese (普通話 / 普通话). Standard Chinese is based on Mandarin (官話 / 官话), the language that was used in the past as “officialese”. Standard Chinese is spoken by around 950 million people, making it the language with the largest number of native speakers in the world.

All common dialects in China are written with the same Chinese characters. Chinese writing uses logograms, which means that each character stands for at least one morpheme (the smallest unit of language which has an identifiable meaning or grammatical function).

The spelling of the Chinese characters was significantly simplified in 1956. The set of characters used in written Chinese today is therefore called Simplified Chinese (简体). Taiwan and Hong Kong still use the traditional character variant – Traditional Chinese (繁体).

The earliest known evidence of Chinese writing dates back to 2000 BC. That makes Chinese one of the few languages still spoken today that has existed in its written form for more than three thousand years.
