A few facts about Brazilian Portuguese
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Macao, Mozambique, East Timor, São Tomé and Principe and is also one of the official languages of the European Union, the African Union, Mercosur/Mercosul, UNASUR, the OAS and the CPLP. Portuguese is considered a world language.
Brazil has by far the largest population of Portuguese-speaking people (around 215 million), as well as the world’s sixth largest economy. Brazilian Portuguese (português brasileiro, português do Brasil) is the variant of Portuguese that is spoken in Brazil. In 1990, the Portuguese-speaking countries Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Principe concluded the Portuguese Language Orthographic Agreement of 1990 (Acordo Ortográfico de 1990) for Portuguese spelling and punctuation. As a result, there are now only a small number of differences between written Brazilian Portuguese and written European Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese grammar is slightly different from that of European Portuguese (the standard in Portugal), however. This means that although people who speak Brazilian Portuguese can often immediately recognise texts written in European Portuguese, the formulations these texts contain can sound slightly “foreign” to them.

Brazil as a business location
The Brazilian economy boasts a wide range of innovative and export-orientated industrial companies and service providers. Due to its rich mineral resources, Brazil is one of the world leaders in the mining, metalworking, oil and gas industries. It is also making its mark in the transport, chemical and plastics, mechanical and electrical engineering, and electronics and automotive industries. Its international tourism sector is still relatively underdeveloped, however.
Over 20% of Brazil’s GDP is generated with exports. China and the USA are Brazil’s most important trading partners, followed by Argentina, the Netherlands and Germany. After significant declines in the period around 2005, the share of Brazil’s GDP accounted for by exports started increasing again steadily, and in some cases rather sharply, over the last few years.
